Accessibility Statement

Accessibility Statement – BSL Search

Last updated: 2 August 2026

1. Our Commitment to Accessibility

BSL Search is committed to making its website, mobile applications, British Sign Language learning resources, and online services accessible to as many people as possible.

As a Deaf-led platform, accessibility and inclusive communication are central to the purpose of BSL Search.

We aim to provide an inclusive digital experience for Deaf people, hard-of-hearing people, disabled people, BSL learners, families, educators, organisations, and other users with different access needs.

2. Scope of This Statement

This Accessibility Statement applies to:

  • The BSL Search website.
  • The BSL Search mobile applications for iOS and Android.
  • The BSL dictionary and video resources.
  • Educational and GCSE learning resources.
  • Games and interactive learning activities.
  • Account, subscription, and payment pages.
  • Other online services operated by BSL Search.

Third-party websites and services linked from BSL Search have their own accessibility arrangements and are not directly controlled by us.

3. Accessibility Standards

We aim to follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 at Level AA where reasonably possible.

These guidelines explain how digital content can be made more accessible for people with visual, hearing, physical, speech, cognitive, language, learning, and neurological disabilities.

BSL Search has not yet completed a full independent accessibility audit of every website page, mobile application screen, video, document, and interactive feature.

We therefore do not currently claim that every part of BSL Search fully conforms to WCAG 2.2 Level AA.

4. Accessibility Features

We have implemented, or are working to implement, accessibility features including:

  • British Sign Language video content.
  • Clear headings and logical page structures.
  • Responsive layouts for desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.
  • Keyboard-accessible navigation where supported.
  • Visible keyboard focus indicators.
  • Light mode and dark mode support.
  • High-contrast colours where reasonably possible.
  • Readable font sizes and spacing.
  • Descriptive labels for form controls.
  • Alternative text for meaningful images where appropriate.
  • Clear validation and error messages.
  • Controls for replaying, pausing, and navigating videos.
  • Portrait and landscape support where available.
  • Reduced reliance on colour alone to communicate information.
  • Content written in clear and understandable language.

5. British Sign Language Content

BSL Search provides video-based British Sign Language learning content, including dictionary signs, sentences, games, family signs, educational resources, and other learning materials.

Where practical, we aim to provide supporting written information, headings, labels, and navigation alongside video content.

Some BSL videos may not include spoken audio because the primary content is visual British Sign Language.

Where a video contains important spoken audio or other meaningful sound, we aim to provide captions, a transcript, or an appropriate alternative where reasonably possible.

6. Using the Website

You should generally be able to:

  • Zoom the website using your browser controls.
  • Navigate many parts of the website using a keyboard.
  • Use the website on desktop, tablet, and mobile screens.
  • Use light mode or dark mode where available.
  • Pause, replay, and navigate supported video content.
  • Complete forms using labelled input fields.
  • Access links and buttons with visible focus indicators.

Browser zoom and device accessibility settings may affect the layout of some pages. We continue to improve responsiveness at larger text and zoom levels.

7. Mobile Application Accessibility

The BSL Search mobile applications are designed to work with common accessibility features provided by iOS and Android.

These may include:

  • Screen readers such as VoiceOver and TalkBack.
  • Text scaling and larger font settings.
  • Device-level colour and contrast settings.
  • Reduced-motion preferences where supported.
  • Portrait and landscape orientation where available.
  • Accessible labels for navigation controls and buttons.

Some application screens or interactive video features may not yet work perfectly with every assistive technology or device combination.

8. Known Accessibility Limitations

We are aware that some parts of BSL Search may not yet be fully accessible.

Possible limitations may include:

  • Some older images may not yet have complete or sufficiently descriptive alternative text.
  • Some older pages may not have a fully consistent heading structure.
  • Some custom video controls may require further keyboard or screen reader improvements.
  • Some interactive games may not yet provide an equivalent experience for every assistive technology.
  • Some downloadable PDF documents may not be fully accessible to screen reader users.
  • Some third-party payment or external service pages are controlled by their respective providers.
  • Some colour combinations or older interface components may require further contrast improvements.
  • Some content may not reflow perfectly at very high browser zoom or text-size settings.

We are reviewing these areas and will make improvements as resources, technology, and development schedules allow.

9. Documents and Downloadable Content

Some educational resources, reports, certificates, or course materials may be provided as PDF documents or other downloadable formats.

We aim to make new documents accessible where reasonably possible. However, some older or automatically generated files may not meet all accessibility requirements.

If you require a document in another format, please contact us. We will consider reasonable requests for an accessible alternative.

10. Third-Party Services

BSL Search may use or link to third-party services such as:

  • Stripe Checkout.
  • Apple App Store.
  • Google Play.
  • Google services.
  • Microsoft services.
  • Email and hosting providers.

We do not control the accessibility of third-party websites, applications, checkout pages, or external platforms.

Accessibility issues relating directly to a third-party service may need to be reported to that service provider.

11. Reporting an Accessibility Problem

We welcome feedback about the accessibility of BSL Search.

Please contact us if:

  • You cannot access part of our website or mobile application.
  • A video, form, page, document, or feature is difficult to use.
  • You find a problem that is not listed in this statement.

  • The page, screen, or feature affected.
  • The web address, where applicable.
  • The device and browser you were using.
  • The assistive technology you were using, if relevant.
  • A brief description of the problem.

12. Requesting an Accessible Alternative

If you need information from BSL Search in a different format, please contact us.

Depending on the content and your needs, an alternative may include:

  • A plain-text version.
  • An accessible HTML version.
  • A larger-print version.
  • A corrected or accessible PDF.
  • Written information supporting a video.
  • Another reasonable accessible format.

We will review each request and respond as soon as reasonably possible.

13. Assessment and Testing

BSL Search accessibility is assessed through a combination of:

  • Developer reviews.
  • Keyboard navigation checks.
  • Responsive layout testing.
  • Colour-contrast checks.
  • Testing on desktop and mobile devices.
  • Testing with browser and device accessibility settings.
  • User feedback.

This website and the BSL Search mobile applications have not yet undergone a complete independent accessibility audit.

Most recent internal review: 2 August 2026

Next planned review: August 2027, or sooner following significant service changes.

14. Ongoing Improvements

Accessibility is an ongoing process.

We plan to continue improving:

  • Keyboard navigation.
  • Screen reader labels.
  • Form instructions and error handling.
