Practise BSL Signs with the Mirror Tool

Practise BSL signs with the mirror tool: watch a British Sign Language example, then record your own attempt using your camera. Compare handshape, movement, positioning and expression when you review your recording.

Use the recording controls to review your signing, repeat difficult movements and build confidence at your own pace.

The mirror tool supports independent BSL practice on compatible phones, tablets and desktop computers with a camera.

How to use BSL mirror practice

Position yourself where your hands, face and upper body remain visible. Good lighting and a simple background make movements easier to compare. The tool requests camera and microphone access for recording.

Watch the example before signing. Focus on one feature at a time, such as handshape, direction, location or facial expression, then repeat the complete sign naturally.

When the example ends, a three-second countdown runs and recording starts if camera and microphone access is allowed. Select Stop when you have finished signing. You can then use Download Recording to save your attempt, Try Again to repeat the example, or Next Question to move on.

Review your signing and prepare another attempt

Save any recording you want to keep before moving on or leaving the page. Open the downloaded clip on your device and compare it with the example. Look for one specific difference, such as the position of your hands or the direction of a movement, then concentrate on that feature during your next attempt.

The camera view helps you see your own movements; it does not automatically assess whether a sign is correct. A BSL tutor can help explain differences you cannot resolve by watching the example. You can also use the video dictionary to revisit individual signs.

If your camera does not start, check the browser permissions for this website and close other apps that may be using the camera. Recording support depends on your browser and device. You can still use the example video for observation and practice if recording is unavailable.
